Sport Science

The Gold Coast has a breadth of experience in sports science, strength and conditioning services and state-of-the-art testing facilities, including three award-winning universities.

Our fast growing city provides an abundance of health care services for a broad range of athletes and their health and medical requirements, giving teams access to a range of leading sport specific specialists including physiotherapists, sports doctors, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, osteopaths, podiatrists and chiropractors.

The Gold Coast has an Altitude Training Centre that works with coaches and athletes to help them achieve their sporting goals in all sports areas, including Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT) to athletes for sports performance enhancement and rehabilitation.

Bond University Sports Centre

Bond University is one of Australia’s leading private universities. Located on more than 50 hectares at Robina, the campus is a leader in sports science and exercise studies.

The Bond University Sports Centre (BUSC) and the associated Bond University Sport Research Centre (BUISRC) are at the forefront of sports science/medicine services and research on the Gold Coast.

In addition to the expanding range of teams and squads assisted by BUSC (across sports such as swimming, beach volleyball and soccer) the institute offers a full range of sports-related services. BUSC and the Research Centre offer testing services across the main sports science disciplines of physiology, biochemistry (including haematology and lactate testing), biomechanics, sports psychology, strength and conditioning and physiotherapy.

Current research projects are directed toward areas such as devising new anti-doping strategies and investigating the exercise dose-response relationships to performance.

Examples of projects and consultancies in which they have been involved include:

  • strength and conditioning for Australian National Rugby League teams and internationally based Rugby Union teams
  • coordinating sports medicine services for the British Olympic and Para Olympic teams (2000)
  • physiological testing services to the Ford Performance Racing Team
